Chippewas Alternate Logo
The Central Michigan Chippewas have a long and storied history of athletic excellence, dating back to the early 1900s. Throughout their time in an NCAA Division I program, they have consistently shown their commitment to success on the field by adopting various logos over the years. From traditional Native American symbols to more modern designs, each logo has had its own unique story and significance for CMU fans.
One of the most iconic logos in Central Michigan’s history is known as “Chippy” – a cartoon-style image of a chipping woodpecker wearing a feathered headdress with two feathers sticking out from either side. The original design dates back to 1972 when it was first introduced as part of CMU's "Spirit" campaign during Homecoming Week festivities that year. This logo would become synonymous with Chippewa pride until 1999 when it was replaced by another version featuring an updated look and feel that featured brighter colors and sharper lines than before – this version remains in use today at all sporting events hosted by Central Michigan University Athletics!
In addition to “Chippy,” there are several other alternate logos used throughout different eras at CMU including The Block C (introduced in 2005), which features bold lettering inside block letters; The Claw (introduced in 2011) which depicts three claws surrounding an interlocking C & M; And lastly, our newest mark - The Fire Up Chips Logo (introduced 2019), showcasing fiery orange flames around white lettering spelling out ‘Fire Up Chips!'. Each one has its own special meaning for those who follow or support Central Michigan athletics - whether you're cheering them on or representing them proudly elsewhere around campus or beyond!
No matter what era you come from though, these alternate logos will always be associated with some level of pride amongst members within our community here at CMU – something we can all take comfort in knowing no matter where life takes us after graduation day arrives… Go chips!!
