Penguins Alternate Logo

The Youngstown State Penguins have a long and storied history in college sports. From their days as members of the Mid-Continent Conference to their current home in the Horizon League, they’ve always had a passionate fanbase that loves to cheer on its team. But many fans may not know that, over time, YSU has had several alternate logos for its athletic programs. Let's take a look back at some of these unique designs!

One logo from early on was an orange and black penguin with “YSU” written underneath it in white lettering. This design was used primarily during YSU's tenure in Division II athletics from 1978-1983 before replacing another logo featuring an abstractly designed penguin wearing sunglasses and holding up one finger (representing number 1). The colors were also changed to red, black, silver & white, which would become synonymous with all future Penguin logos going forward into Division I competition starting with the 1985 season.

In 1998, another redesign took place, which saw more modernized features added, such as sharper lines around the edges of both wings & beaks and more enormous eyes, giving this particular version much greater detail than previous ones. The most recent update came about just last year when new font styles were added alongside updated shading techniques, making this newest iteration appear even more lifelike than ever!
