Golden Eagles Alternate Logo
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are a proud member of the NCAA and have been since they were founded in 1912. Over the years, they have developed an iconic logo that is recognized around the world. The primary logo features an eagle with its wings spread wide and a yellow "S" on its chest, representing both school spirit and strength.
However, few people know that there was yet another alternate logo for this beloved team: The Flying Eagle Logo! This design featured two eagles in flight above a shield-shaped crest with two stars at each corner. It also had “Southern Mississippi” written across it in all caps font style along with “Golden Eagles” below it in smaller letters. This unique design was used from 1966 to 1974 before being replaced by what we now recognize as their official emblem today – but not without leaving behind an important legacy first!
During this time period when this alternate insignia was active, Southern Miss experienced some of their most successful seasons ever; including winning 4 consecutive bowl games (1966 - 1969), becoming Division II National Champions (1970), and appearing twice more after that until 1975. Clearly, something special must have been going on during these 8 years – perhaps having such strong representation through their flying eagle symbol played some part?
Regardless of whether or not you believe so or not; one thing is certain: The Flying Eagle Logo will always be remembered fondly by fans as part of Southern Miss' rich history within college sports culture! So next time you see someone sporting apparel featuring our beloved golden birds soaring through the skies – take pride in knowing how deep our roots run here at USM... Go Eagles!!
