Vikings Alternate Logo

The Portland State Vikings have a long and storied history, dating back to 1946 when the school was founded. In that time, the school has gone through several different iterations of its logo - each one reflecting changes in style and design as times changed. Today, we’re taking a look at some of these logos from over the years to get an idea of how much this university has evolved.

First up is what is known as “the original Viking head” logo which dates all the way back to 1962 when it was first introduced by then-athletic director Don Fenton. This iconic image featured a fierce-looking Viking with horns atop his head – an image that would become synonymous with Portland State athletics for decades to come. While this logo had been used on various items throughout its tenure (such as uniforms or letterhead), it wasn't until 1995 that it became officially adopted by PSU Athletics Department and made into their primary visual identity mark – cementing itself forever in PSU sports lore!

In 2014 however, things began changing once again for Portland State's branding efforts; they unveiled their new alternate "Vikings Shield" Logo featuring two crossed swords against a shield adorned with traditional Nordic designs—a nod towards both Norse mythology & Scandinavian culture alike! This updated version proved popular amongst fans who appreciated both its modernity & subtle nods toward tradition; making sure everyone knew just where those colors were coming from: The Great Northwest!

While there may be other versions out there now (like our current ‘P Stylized' Logo) nothing will ever quite compare to those classic images which helped define what being part of #VikingNation truly means - no matter what era you're talking about!
