Spiders Wordmark Logo
The Richmond Spiders have a long and proud history of sports excellence, dating back to their inception in 1893. Throughout the years, they’ve proudly represented the University of Richmond across various athletic competitions. As part of their identity, they’ve had several different wordmark logos throughout this time period. In this blog post, we will take a look at some key points in the rich history behind these iconic logos!
The first logo used by The Richmond Spiders dates all the way back to 1932 when former coach Edward Tompkins created it for use on uniforms and other promotional materials. This logo featured an arched “RICHMOND SPIDERS” lettering design with two spiders on either side – one crawling up and one down – representing mobility and agility associated with spider webs as well as resilience which is fitting for any competitive team! It was also unique compared to other collegiate teams at that time who often had more intricate designs or mascots incorporated into their marks instead of just text-based ones like The Spiders.
In 2000 however, there was a significant change made to The Spider's mark when it received its current iteration: an italicized font set against four legs forming what looks like an abstract spider symbol underneath it all. This new design immediately gave off more energy than before while still keeping true elements from previous iterations such as maintaining those same two spiders crawling up/down either side but now within a much bolder framework overall giving them even greater visibility than ever before!
It has been over 20 years since then yet still today many fans recognize this version instantly due to its timelessness & simplicity - proving how effective modernizing classic symbols can be if done right (and why sometimes you don't need fancy graphics!). Going forward into 2021 & beyond we hope that despite any changes coming our way; whether minor or major – these core principles remain intact so future generations may continue enjoying them too!
