Cardinals Wordmark Logo

The Louisville Cardinals wordmark logo has been a part of the university’s identity since its inception in 1887. The original design featured a cardinal perched atop an open book with the words “University of Louisville” written across it. This classic logo was used until 1997 when it was replaced by a more modern version featuring just the bird and no other text or imagery.

In 2010, this updated design underwent yet another transformation to become what we know today as the “L-Bird Logo”—a stylized redbird set against two interlocking Ls that form an oval shape around it. This new take on their traditional symbol represents strength and courage while conveying energy and motion through its bold colors and dynamic lines. The school officially adopted this look in 2011, ensuring everyone would recognize them wherever they went!

Since then, many variations have been created for different sports teams within the University of Louisville Athletics, such as basketball (the famous Cardinal Birdcage), baseball (the Redbird Diamond), football (Cardinal Claw), and volleyball (Red Attack). All these versions feature slight variations in color palettes or shapes but still maintain consistency with each other so fans can quickly identify them at first glance!
