Lions Primary Logo
The Southeastern Louisiana Lions have a long and storied history of excellence in NCAA sports. As one of the most successful programs in the Southland Conference, they’ve had plenty to be proud of over the years. But what about their primary logo? How did it come to represent this powerhouse program?
To understand that, we must go back to 1968 when Southeastern Louisiana first adopted its current mascot – The Lion! It was then that athletic director John Lavin designed a simple but powerful lion head logo which has been used ever since as an official symbol for athletics at SLU. This iconic image features two crossed swords beneath a fierce-looking lion's head with a flowing mane and piercing eyes. This emblem perfectly captures the strength and courage of these fearless athletes!
In 1996, after nearly 30 years of using this original design, SLU decided it was time for an update. Working closely with Nike designers, they tweaked some minor details, such as adding more detail around the eyes and mouth while also introducing new colors like purple & gold into its palette, creating what is now known today as “The Primary Logo” or simply “SLU Lion Head” by fans across campus (and beyond). Ever since then, this updated version has become synonymous not only with Southeastern Louisiana Athletics but also pride amongst alums everywhere who proudly display their school spirit through apparel featuring these beloved symbols from home sweet home!
So there you have it – A brief look into how one small image can create so much emotion and loyalty among those who follow our beloved Lions year-round on their quest towards greatness every season! Go Lions!!
