Hurricanes Wordmark Logo

The Miami Hurricanes wordmark logo is one of the most recognizable logos in all college sports. The logo has been around since 1973 and symbolizes excellence, pride, and tradition for the University of Miami football program.

The original design was created by John Schmalz, who was inspired by a 1950s-era Hurricane fighter jet that he saw at an air show while attending school in Florida. The design featured bold block lettering with sharp angles, representing the power and strength associated with hurricanes and the speed associated with fighter jets. This combination made it instantly recognizable and unique from other collegiate logos at that time, thus making it stand out among its peers even today.

Since its introduction over forty years ago, there have been several updates to keep up with changing times. Still, overall very few changes have occurred when compared to other collegiate programs across America, including minor color adjustments such as adding black outlines or shading behind some letters, or switching between green/orange/white palettes depending on seasonality needs within different marketing campaigns throughout each year (i-e: Homecoming). Regardless of what small changes are done, though - be they large or small - one thing remains constant: no matter how much time passes, you will always recognize “the U” when you see it!
