Monarchs Primary Logo
The Old Dominion Monarchs are a college basketball program that has been around since 1930. They have had many different logos over the years, but their primary logo is one of the most recognizable in all of NCAA sports. The current version was designed in 2014 and features an eagle with its wings spread wide, perched atop a shield featuring ODU's colors blue and silver.
The original logo for the Old Dominion Monarchs featured a lion wearing armor and holding a sword above his head while standing on top of two crossed swords surrounded by stars. This symbolized power, strength, courage, and protection which were all qualities associated with monarchs at that time period. It also served to show off ODU's royal heritage as it was founded as an institution for higher learning under King Charles II in 1647 before becoming part of Virginia Tech in 1969 when it became known as Old Dominion University (ODU).
In 2000 this design began to be phased out due to copyright issues regarding its similarity with other university logos such as those from George Mason University or William & Mary College both had similar designs at that time period too. In response, Old dominion decided to come up with something completely unique so they created their now iconic eagle-on-shield emblem which has become synonymous not only with NCAA sports but throughout the Hampton Roads region where ODU is located. The new logo depicted an American Bald Eagle soaring high above two crossed swords representing strength, protection, courage & loyalty - exactly what you'd expect from any Monarch!
Today this same design remains unchanged except for minor tweaks here or there like color variations depending on whether it’s being used on apparel or promotional materials etc. Regardless though no matter how much times change one thing will always remain constant; when you see that bold blue & silver shield topped off by a majestic bald eagle then you know without a doubt you're looking at official insignia belonging to none other than the proud members of “Monarch Nation”!
