Fighting Irish Wordmark Logo

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish wordmark logo has been a part of the university’s identity since its inception in 1887. The iconic logo features a gold shield with the school’s name written in bold blue letters, is one of the most recognizable symbols associated with college sports. In addition to being used on athletic uniforms and merchandise, it can also be seen plastered on walls throughout campus, around South Bend, and beyond.

Brother Paul Dobberstein created the original design for this timeless symbol in 1964 while he was working at Notre Dame's Art Department. He drew inspiration from ancient Greek coins featuring Athena's profile found during archeological digs near Rome and Athens, respectively; these coins served as his source material when creating what would become an enduring icon for generations to come: The Fighting Irish Wordmark Logo!

Since its introduction more than fifty years ago, this classic design has undergone several iterations. Still, it remains true to its original form—a testament to how powerful even simple designs can be if done right! It continues to represent all great about Notre Dame athletics: courage, determination & spirit—all qualities embodied by their beloved mascot “the Leprechaun." This beloved symbol will continue representing these values long into the future, ensuring everyone knows who they are rooting for when they hear those famous words "Go Irish!"
