Gaels Wordmark Logo

Since its inception in 1928, the Saint Mary's Gaels have been one of the most successful and storied NCAA programs. With a long history of success on and off the court, it is no surprise that their logo has become an iconic symbol for college sports fans across America. The current wordmark logo features bold lettering with a Gaelic font to represent both the school’s Irish heritage as well as its athletic prowess.

The original Saint Mary’s College wordmark was created in 1958 by graphic designer Bob Peak, who also designed logos for Major League Baseball teams like San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers during his career. This first version featured simple block letters spelling out “StMarysCollegesAthletics" with an interlocking monogram underneath it which represented both athletics and academics at SMC (Saint Mary's College). In 1999 this design was updated to feature a more modern-looking serif typeface with subtle curves along each letter that provided more balance between text size while still keeping true to SMC’s traditional roots.

Over time, this classic look has evolved into what we now recognize today: A bold red script featuring two capitalized letters representing ‘SMC' - Stands For Saint Mary's College - followed by four smaller lowercase letters spelling out 'Gaels'. This new version pays tribute not only to SMC but also honors their mascot – The Fighting Irishman – which dates back all way back to 1891 when students began wearing green uniforms during football games in honor of Ireland’s patron saint Patrick!

Today, the timeless look remains unchanged; however slight variations can be seen depending on where you see it used such as official team apparel or university merchandise.
