Privateers Wordmark Logo

Welcome, sports fans! Today we’re looking at the history of the New Orleans Privateers wordmark logo. The University of New Orleans (UNO) has had an athletic program since 1958 and was known as “The Privateers” from its inception until 2013 when it changed to “The Pelicans.” Throughout that period, UNO teams have sported variations on their iconic wordmark logo in honor of their namesake – privateer ships that sailed during colonial times.

In 1965, UNO adopted its first official university colors: green and silver with black accents. This color scheme would be used for decades afterward, with various iterations appearing on different uniforms. In 1992, a new version was created by graphic designer David Schulte which featured two crossed swords below the words "Privateers" written in all-caps font above an anchor symbolizing maritime tradition associated with privateering activities in early America's Gulf Coast region where UNO is located.

This mark remained unchanged until 2000 when another update occurred featuring more modern typography but still keeping true to its original design elements like bold lettering and crossed swords beneath it; this iteration remains today as part of both primary logos for men's basketball team along with some other athletics programs across campus.

While there have been several versions throughout history, one thing remains constant. Each mark pays homage to those brave sailors who fought off pirates while sailing through treacherous waters centuries ago, making them perfect symbols for our collegiate athletes fighting against opponents on land or water!
