Wildcats Wordmark Logo
For over a century, the Davidson Wildcats have been proudly representing their school in athletics. As part of this tradition, they also carry with them a unique and recognizable logo that has changed throughout the years. Today we’ll take a look at some of those changes and how they reflect the evolution of Davidson College as an institution over time.
The first iteration of what would become known as “the Wildcat” was designed by J.W Scott in 1913 for use on letterheads and other printed materials associated with the college's athletic teams. The design featured an orange-and-black shield shape containing two crossed swords beneath which sat three stars arranged into triangles—a nod to North Carolina's nickname "The Tar Heel State." This version remained relatively unchanged until 1950 when it was replaced by another shield featuring just one sword above three stars arranged more closely together than before; this is still used today on many official documents from Davidson College Athletics Department such as media guides or game programs.
In 1973, however, things began to change again when graphic designer John Bostick created yet another new logo for use exclusively on apparel items like jerseys or hats: A black silhouette image depicting a wildcat leaping through flames while carrying its own tail! This design quickly became popular among students who adopted it as their unofficial mascot symbolizing strength & courage despite any challenges faced during sporting events (or life). It remains largely unchanged even now although there were slight modifications made between 2003–2006 including adding white outlining around certain elements like eyes/ears etc., making them stand out better against dark backgrounds.
Finally in 2016 after much anticipation from alumni & fans alike - The University unveiled its newest update to ‘the Wildcat:' An updated version featuring brighter colors along with sharper edges all around giving off more modern vibes compared to previous iterations. This latest rendition pays homage to both old & new designs while simultaneously reflecting upon current trends within collegiate sports logos across the nation – A perfect way to show your pride in being part of #WildcatsNation!
