49ers Wordmark Logo

The Charlotte 49ers have a proud history of athletic excellence, and their wordmark logo is no exception. For decades, the iconic logo has been an integral part of the school’s identity and has served as a symbol of its spirit and pride.

Since its inception in 1988, the Charlotte 49ers wordmark logo has evolved to become one of college athletics’ most recognizable symbols. The original design featured two bolded words “Charlotte” in red with “49ERS” underneath it in black lettering. This simple yet powerful design was created by then-athletic director Bill Dooley with help from graphic designer Mike McCue who also designed logos for professional sports teams such as the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Braves at that time.

In 1996, when current Athletic Director Judy Rose took over leadership at Charlotte Athletics she wanted to update their look while still staying true to their roots so she commissioned artist John Riddle to redesign it into what we know today: A bright green Niner head outlined against a white background accompanied by red letters spelling out "CHARLOTTE" above them followed by "49ERS". The new design gave off an energetic vibe that perfectly encapsulated what being part of this university meant - passion & determination! It quickly became synonymous with success both on & off campus leading up until now where you can find students proudly wearing t-shirts or hats featuring this classic emblem all around town!

We here at Charlotte are proud that our beloved mascot will continue representing us well into future generations thanks largely due to his timelessness & appeal through modern updates like these throughout years past!
