Rams Wordmark Logo

The Virginia Commonwealth Rams have a long and proud history that dates back to the late 19th century. The team’s wordmark logo has evolved over time, reflecting the changing times and culture of VCU athletics.

The original logo was designed in 1968 by alumnus Tom O'Brien as part of his master's thesis project at VCU School of Arts & Sciences. It featured an “R” with two horns on either side, representing strength and power. This design remained unchanged until 1999 when it was slightly modified to reflect a more modern look with sharper edges for the lettering and horns, along with a new color scheme featuring black, white, and gold tones instead of red or orange shades used previously.

In 2013 another update was made which included removing one horn from each side of the “R” while keeping its basic shape intact; this version also added additional shading behind both letters for depth effect as well as introducing metallic silver accents throughout giving it even more dimensionality than before! Finally, in 2020 yet another redesign occurred where now both letters are encased within an oval-like shape symbolizing unity among all members associated with Virginia Commonwealth University Athletics—both past present future!

Overall these changes illustrate how important tradition is to those affiliated with VCU while still allowing some flexibility so they can stay relevant in today's ever-changing world environment too!
