Spartans Wordmark Logo

The San Jose State Spartans have a long and proud tradition in college athletics, dating back to the school's founding in 1857. As one of the oldest universities in California, San Jose State has had its share of successes on the field and off. The university also boasts an iconic wordmark logo that is recognized around the world as a symbol of excellence both academically and athletically.

The original Spartan wordmark was designed by renowned graphic designer Saul Bass in 1965 for use on all athletic uniforms, stationery materials, event programs, apparel items, and more. The design features two bold red letters “S” with a white outline surrounding them – representing strength through unity – along with three black stars above them to signify courage under pressure or challenge from adversity. This classic look has been used by generations of athletes at SJSU ever since it first debuted nearly 55 years ago!

Over time though this iconic logo underwent some subtle changes as well; most notably when it was updated during the 2014-2015 academic year to include larger lettering (which is now slightly angled), thicker outlines around each “S” character plus four additional stars instead just three before then - giving us what we know today: an instantly recognizable symbol synonymous not only with excellence but also pride within our community here at SJSU!

In addition to being featured prominently across various sports teams' uniforms throughout their history - including football jerseys worn during home games which feature large versions emblazoned onto either side - this timeless logo can be found everywhere from student IDs cards right up through alumni merchandise too so there really isn't any doubt about how much love people have for these colors & shapes that represent everything we stand behind here at San José State University!
