Owls Wordmark Logo

The Temple Owls wordmark logo has been a symbol of school pride at Temple University since its inception in 1888. This iconic logo has gone through many iterations over the years, but it still serves as an important part of the university’s identity and culture.

The original version of the Temple Owls wordmark was designed by Frank Cairns in 1934 when he created a two-tone “T” with a stylized owl perched atop it. This design became known as the “Old Owl T” and is still used today on some merchandise items such as t-shirts and hats. In 1984, graphic designer Raymond Loewy updated this classic design to create what we now know as “New Owl T". The new look featured bolder colors and smoother lines that gave it a more modern appeal while maintaining its traditional roots; this version is often seen adorning athletic gear or promotional materials for events hosted by the university.

In 2011, further changes were made to give us our current iteration: "Owl Icon". This simplified take on Old Owl T removed all text from the image so that only an abstract representation remained – one which could be easily recognized without words or explanation! Despite these modifications throughout history, each variation manages to capture both past traditions while embracing modern trends; something truly unique about being part of this special community!
