Aggies Wordmark Logo

As a sports fan, you’re likely familiar with the New Mexico State Aggies and their iconic wordmark logo. The history of this logo dates back to the early days of NCAA competition when it was first adopted in 1955. Originally designed by legendary graphic designer Saul Bass, this simple yet powerful design has been used to represent the university's athletic teams ever since.

The original design featured an “Aggie A” set against a shield-like background with two stars on either side representing New Mexico's statehood status at that time. Over time, various changes have been made to modernize and refresh its look while maintaining its core identity as an Aggie symbol—most notably in 1995 when red replaced white as part of a more significant rebranding effort for all NMSU athletics programs.

In addition to these visual updates over the years, there are also several stories behind why certain elements were chosen or modified from one version of the logo to another—such as how “NMSU” was added underneath it during 2006 redesigns or why only seven stars appear instead eight (which is what would usually be seen on traditional shields).
