Aggies Primary Logo
As a sports fan, you are probably familiar with the iconic New Mexico State Aggies logo. For over 100 years, it has been used to represent the school’s athletic teams and is one of the most recognizable logos in college sports. But what do you know about its history? Let’s look at how this timeless emblem came to be and why it remains so beloved by fans today.
The original design for the New Mexico State Aggies logo was created in 1915 by two students: Charles “Chuck” Huggins and Gail Sisler-Fryer. The two were inspired by an illustration of an American bison that appeared on postcards sent from their hometown of Las Cruces, NM, during World War I. They combined elements from this image with other symbols associated with their school—including its colors (orange & white) and mascot (the bulldog). The result was an instantly recognizable symbol that would become synonymous with NMSU athletics for generations to come!
In 1969, however, NMSU adopted a new primary logo explicitly designed for uniforms: A silhouette of a charging bulldog wearing sunglasses above three stars representing each letter in “NMSU." This version remained popular until 1991, when another redesign featured bold orange letters spelling out "AGGIES" set against white stars outlined in black, which is still used today!
As time goes on, we can expect more changes. Still, one thing will remain constant ––the passion behind our beloved New Mexico State University Athletics program represented proudly through our classic Aggie Logo!
