Dukes Wordmark Logo
The James Madison Dukes have a long and storied history in the NCAA, with their wordmark logo playing an integral role. The Dukes' iconic logo has been used to represent the team since its inception and is still seen today on fan apparel, merchandise, and more.
First introduced in 1972 as part of a rebranding effort by then-athletic director Jim Corrigan, the original James Madison Dukes wordmark featured bold block letters spelling out “DUKES” set against an all-blue background. This design was meant to convey strength and power—two qualities that embody what it means to be a Duke—and quickly became popular among fans of JMU athletics.
In 2003, after decades of use by both students and alumni alike, the university made some minor updates to its beloved mascot's look while maintaining much of its original style: blue lettering remained intact but was now accompanied by white accents around each letter; additionally, two stars were added above ‘JMU’ for further emphasis on school pride. These subtle changes gave new life to this classic symbol which had become synonymous with JMU sports teams throughout Virginia (VA).
In recent years there have been several other iterations released including one featuring cursive font inside red outline letters along with another one featuring black outlining instead; however, these versions never gained traction like earlier designs did so eventually reverted back towards the traditional look that is still being used today at many sporting events across VA & beyond!
The timelessness & versatility associated with James Madison University's official wordmark makes it perfect for any occasion - from cheering on your favorite team during game day or proudly displaying your school spirit off campus - no matter how you choose to show support everyone knows exactly who you are rooting for when they see those three simple words "Go, DUKEs!"
