Since its inception in 1981, Florida Atlantic University has been proudly represented by the iconic Owl logo. The school's wordmark and mascot have become synonymous with FAU's spirit of excellence and commitment to academic achievement. But what is the history behind this beloved symbol? Let’s take a look back at how it all began!

The original Florida Atlantic Owls logo was designed in 1982 by Richard Jaffe, an art professor at FAU. His design featured a large owl perched atop two crossed swords set against a red shield-like background – representing strength and power as well as wisdom and knowledge (two things that are essential for success). Over time, certain aspects of the design were tweaked to better reflect modern trends while still maintaining its classic essence; this includes adding more detail to the owl itself such as feathers on its wings or eyes that appear larger than before.

In 2014, after much consideration from faculty members across campus departments including athletics marketing teams - they decided upon an updated version that features bolder colors (blue & white) along with sharper lines/angles throughout giving it more “pop” when seen up close or far away making sure everyone knows who we are cheering for! This new iteration also included subtle nods towards our university seal which can be found within each individual lettering style used: Goudy Old Style Bold Italic font typeface being one example here today too! Ultimately though no matter if you prefer old vs new – there is no denying just how important these symbols remain within our community both now and then forevermore...GO OWLS!!!
