Blue Hens Wordmark Logo
As a sports fan, seeing a team’s logo evolve over the years is always exciting. The logo is a visual representation of the team’s history and identity and often reflects the organization's changes and growth. In the case of the Delaware Blue Hens, their alternate logo history is a testament to their rich tradition and commitment to excellence.
The Delaware Blue Hens, also known as the Fightin’ Blue Hens, are the University of Delaware athletic teams. The university’s mascot, the Blue Hen, has a long and storied history that dates back to the American Revolution. During the Revolutionary War, Delaware soldiers were known for their tenacity and bravery, earning them the nickname “Blue Hens” after the fighting cocks that were carried into battle. This fierce and determined spirit is still embodied in the Delaware Blue Hens logo today.
The first alternate logo for the Blue Hens was introduced in 1978. It featured a blue and gold shield with a blue hen in the center, surrounded by the words “University of Delaware” and “Blue Hens.” This logo was used until 1997, when it was replaced by a more modern and dynamic design. The new logo featured a blue hen with its wings spread, perched on a football. This logo was used for all the university’s athletic teams, including football, basketball, and baseball.
In 2010, the Blue Hens unveiled a new alternate logo that paid homage to their rich history. The logo featured a blue hen with its wings spread, standing on a shield with the words “Delaware” and “Fightin’ Blue Hens” written in bold letters. This logo was used for all the university’s athletic teams and quickly became a fan favorite.
In 2014, the Blue Hens introduced a new alternate logo to celebrate their 125th anniversary. The logo featured a blue hen with its wings spread, standing on a football with the number “125” written in bold letters. This logo was used for one year only, but it was a special tribute to the university’s long and successful athletic history.
The most recent alternate logo for the Blue Hens was introduced in 2019. It features a blue hen with its wings spread, standing on a blue and gold shield with the words “Delaware” and “Blue Hens” written in bold letters.
