Bears Wordmark Logo

The Brown Bears wordmark logo has a long and storied history in NCAA athletics. Dating back to the early 1900s, this iconic logo has been associated with some of college sports’ greatest moments. From basketball championships to football bowl games, the Brown Bears have proudly represented their school on fields and courts throughout the country.

In its original form, the Brown Bears wordmark was introduced as part of an overall branding effort by then-athletic director Charles Wightman in 1908. At that time it featured two overlapping B's for "Brown" set against a white background with navy blue trim - colors that remain consistent today and are synonymous with all things related to The University of Rhode Island (URI). This design went largely unchanged until 1968 when URI unveiled an updated version featuring three interlocking B's which remains in use today across various mediums including apparel and team merchandise as well as signage at athletic venues like Meade Stadium or Ryan Center Arena where they host men’s & women’s basketball respectively.

In addition to being used by URI Athletics teams since 1908, this classic logo has also become one of college sports' most recognizable marks due to its association with many memorable events over more than 100 years such as winning national titles for both baseball (1941) & softball (1982), making multiple trips deep into March Madness tournaments or even hosting ESPN College Gameday at Meade Stadium prior to their matchup against Boston College during 2017 season opener! All these accomplishments further cemented what is now known worldwide: The Bear Is On The Move!
