The National Hockey League (NHL) 's franchise move from Arizona to Salt Lake City is significant. The relocated team will make its debut as the Utah Hockey Club, a temporary name that will be used during its inaugural season. The Smith Entertainment Group, which owns the NBA's Utah Jazz, announced the move on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
The Arizona Coyotes' franchise was sold to the Utah Jazz owners, Smith Entertainment Group, in a deal that closed in April. While the Coyotes' intellectual property will remain with the previous owner, Alex Meruelo, Utah has acquired the franchise rights, the team's players, and the hockey operations department. This sale represents a significant chapter in the franchise's history, marking a fresh start in a new state.
The New Logo: A Fresh Identity for a New Home
The team also released their new logo, colors, and jerseys to mark the fresh start on the day the temporary name was announced. The primary logo is visually striking, featuring a roundel with a "Utah" wordmark in the center. The logo is ringed with "Hockey Club" and employs a color palette of mountain blue, rock black, and salt white, echoing the rugged beauty of the team's new home state.
The typeface used for the logo resembles the previous Utah logo on merchandise, with "Hockey Club" in white around the "Utah" wordmark. This design choice is a subtle nod to the team's new home and the state's hockey history.
Fans at the Heart of the Rebranding
In a move that has excited fans, the team began trademarking names and logos related to the Utah Hockey Club earlier this month. More importantly, the club has involved its fans in the rebranding process. A fan vote for the official team name and mascot is underway, with the next round of voting closing on June 20. With a new name expected for the 2025-26 season, the fan vote has narrowed the choices to six potential names: Utah Blizzard, Utah Hockey Club (Utah HC), Utah Mammoth, Utah Outlaws, Utah Venom, and Utah Yeti.
Future Plans: A New Era in Salt Lake City
The Utah Hockey Club's games will take place at the Delta Center, the home of the Jazz since the 1991-92 season. Plans are in place to expand the number of unobstructed view seats for hockey from 12,000 to approximately 17,500, thereby enhancing the game-day experience for fans. Furthermore, the team currently holds the No. 6 selection in the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft, which will be held at Sphere in Las Vegas, promising an opportunity to acquire fresh talent.
A New Chapter in the NHL
The franchise's relocation from Arizona to Utah is a significant milestone in the NHL's history. Hockey fans eagerly anticipate the inaugural season of the Utah Hockey Club, and the unveiling of the new logo and jerseys has amplified this excitement. The fan vote for the official team name and mascot underscores the club's commitment to involving its supporters in shaping its identity.
As the Utah Hockey Club prepares for its first season, the team's journey from Arizona to Utah stands as a testament to the dynamic nature of professional sports and the passion of hockey fans in Salt Lake City. This move represents a geographical shift and a renewed commitment to the game, its fans, and the community. The anticipation surrounding the club's debut season is palpable, and this new chapter in Utah's sports history is set to be thrilling.
