Leopards Primary Logo
The Lafayette Leopards are proud members of the NCAA, and their primary logo has gone through several iterations over the years. The current version was introduced in 2001, but its roots go back much further than that.
The first known design for what would become the Lafayette Leopards’ primary logo dates all the way back to 1882 when it was adopted by athletic teams at Easton High School in Pennsylvania (the school which eventually became part of Lafayette University). This early iteration featured a leaping leopard with an open mouth and tongue extended outward, as well as a large “L” on its chest representing both “Leopards” and “Lafayette".
In 1935, this original design underwent some changes including simplifying the body shape of the leopard so that it no longer had an open mouth or tongue sticking out. It also added more detail to make it look like fur rather than just simple lines. Additionally, two stars were added above each side of the head signifying excellence in sportsmanship – something which still holds true today!
In 1941 yet another redesign occurred with minor tweaks such as making sure there were five points on each star instead four; changing colors from black & white to brown & gold; adding stripes across shoulders/back area; altering tail shape slightly etc… All these small modifications helped create what is now recognized around campus (and beyond) as being synonymous with not only athletics but also academic success - something we can be proud about here at Lafayette University!
Over time various other versions have been developed for specific applications such as football helmets or apparel items however none have ever surpassed the popularity enjoyed by our beloved original mascot – THE LEOPARD! So next time you see one roaming around campus take moment to reflect upon the history behind the iconic symbol represent us all so proudly since 1882!
