Dukes Primary Logo

The Duquesne Dukes have a long and storied history, dating back to the early 1900s. The school's primary logo has evolved over time, but it still holds true to its original design elements.

In 1921, the first iteration of the Duquesne Dukes' logo was created by Pittsburgh-based graphic designer John A. Lutz Jr., who also designed logos for other teams in town such as the Pirates and Steelers at that time. This initial version featured an illustration of a duke on horseback with his sword raised up high in front of him – an image that remains iconic today!

From there, various minor changes were made throughout subsequent decades including adding color (red & blue) in 1957 as well as making adjustments to lettering styles used for “Duquesne” or “Dukes” text within this same period too. Then came about more drastic modifications which saw even further alterations being done like removing all text from around 1985 until 2001 when it reappeared again along with some subtle stylistic updates being applied during this same timeframe too! Finally after nearly two decades without any major changes aside from slight tweaks here/there; 2013 marked another significant milestone when yet another overhaul occurred featuring modernized typography plus additional colors added into the mix (yellow & gray).

Overall while much has changed since its inception almost 100 years ago; one thing is certain: The spirit behind what makes up the official emblematic representation of Duquesne University will always remain strong no matter how many times its appearance may alter over the course of time!
