Bison Primary Logo
The North Dakota State Bison have a long and proud history, stretching back to 1890 when they were first established as the North Dakota Agricultural College. One thing has remained consistent throughout their illustrious history: their iconic primary logo. This classic design is instantly recognizable across college football – but what’s the story behind its creation?
The original logo was designed in 1962 by art professor Robert Bruce Inverarity for use on letterheads and other stationery items used by NDSU Athletics. The design featured a bison head with an aggressive expression, set against a yellow circle featuring two blue stripes at the top and bottom – representing both school colors of green and gold (the latter being officially adopted in 1964). It was immediately embraced by fans who saw it as symbolic of strength and determination, qualities still associated with the team today!
Over time, however, minor changes have been made to this classic emblem - most notably in 2004, when it underwent its first significant redesign since its introduction over 40 years earlier. This new version featured more detail around the bison's face, including furrows between his eyes, giving him an even more determined look! Additionally, while keeping true to tradition, both school colors were retained within this updated iteration, ensuring that no matter how much things change, some will always remain constant!
From humble beginnings on paper stationary through modern iterations seen online or printed merchandise, there’s no denying how important this symbol is for NDSU Athletics and anyone lucky enough to call themselves part of “Bisondom.”
