The Princeton Tigers have a long and storied history in NCAA athletics, and their primary logo has been an integral part of that story. The original version of the Princeton Tiger was designed by artist Charles Ebbets in 1896 for use on athletic uniforms. This design featured a snarling orange tiger head facing to the left, surrounded by two black stripes at the top and bottom representing paws or claws. It soon became known as “the Ebbets Tiger” among fans, alumni, and students alike—and it continues to be used today with only minor modifications over time.

In 1925, after several years of using different versions of “the Ebbets Tiger” on various apparel items such as jerseys and hats, Princeton officially adopted it as its official school symbol—a decision that would stand until 2003 when they updated it slightly for modern times while still keeping true to its roots. The new version features a more realistic-looking tiger face along with larger eyes set closer together than before; these changes give it an even more intimidating look while still maintaining all elements from previous designs including those two defining black stripes around each side which represent claws or paws (depending upon who you ask).
