Coyotes Primary Logo
The University of South Dakota Coyotes have a long and storied history when it comes to their primary logo. From the iconic Coyote head silhouette, which has been around since the 1950s, to the more recent additions of Native American imagery in recent years, there is no shortage of interesting stories behind each logo design.
The original Coyote head silhouette was designed by artist John Clementson in 1955 and remains one of the most recognizable logos among college sports fans today. This iconic design features a coyote’s face with its ears perked up as if ready for action on game day! The colors chosen were black and white with an orange outline perfectly representing this fierce animal’s spirit on gameday - “Go Yotes!”
In 2007, USD slightly modified their classic mascot logo by adding an image from traditional Lakota art featuring two feathers at either side representing strength and courage- perfect attributes for any athlete or team looking towards victory! This new look also included updated colors such as red & yellow, used throughout many other aspects associated with USD Athletics, including uniforms & merchandise.
For over 60 years now, these logos have served as powerful symbols for both students & alumni alike, who proudly wear them across campus or during games, showing off their school pride everywhere they go! It's clear that through all these changes made over time, one thing remains constant: The University Of South Dakota Coyotes will always be represented by its signature mascot – Go Yotes!!
