The original version of the NSU Demons primary logo was first used in 1979 when the school joined NCAA Division I athletics to move from NAIA competition to NCAA Division I status. The design featured two interlocking “N” letters with a star inside them, which represented both Northwestern State University (NSU) and Demon Athletics, respectively.
