Lumberjacks Primary Logo

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks have a long and proud history, and their primary logo is an integral part of that. The current version of the logo was first introduced in 1997, but it has changed slightly over the years to better reflect the team’s identity.

When it was initially created, the primary logo featured an ax-wielding lumberjack standing atop a mountain with pine trees behind him. This image perfectly captured both NAU's location in Flagstaff as well as its nickname - The Lumberjacks! In addition to this classic design, two other versions were also developed: one featuring only a silhouette of a lumberjack and another which included text reading “Northern Arizona University” underneath it.

In 2007, however, changes were made to modernize the look while still honoring its roots; these included simplifying some elements such as removing several mountains from behind the figure and making his axe more prominent by enlarging its handle size compared to previous iterations. Additionally - for those who wanted something even simpler yet still unmistakably associated with NAU – there was now an option where all you could see was just an outline of our trusty lumberjack holding his axe aloft!

Today this iconic symbol continues to be used on everything from apparel items like t-shirts or hats through official university documents like diplomas or letterhead stationery right up until today when they feature prominently on football helmets during game day at Walkup Skydome Stadium here in Flagstaff AZ! It is truly amazing how much staying power this simple yet powerful image has had since 1997 when first introduced – proving once again why sometimes less really can be more after all.
