The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is a public research university located in San Antonio, Texas. The school has been around since 1969 and has grown to become the largest university in South Texas, with over 32,000 students enrolled. As such an important part of the local community and culture, UTSA proudly displays its iconic Roadrunners brand on everything from apparel to buildings across campus. But how did this beloved mascot come about? Let’s take a look at the history behind UTSA's primary logo!
The original design for UTSA's primary logo was created by artist Jim Evans back in 1981 when he was hired as an art director for what was then known as Southwest Texas State University (SWTSU). His goal was to create something that would represent SWTSU’s spirit and energy while still being distinct enough from other universities' logos so it could stand out on merchandise and uniforms. After much thought and deliberation he settled on a roadrunner – which made perfect sense given that roadrunners are native to southwest regions like San Antonio where SWTSU/UTSA is located.
Evans incorporated many aspects into his design: He used bright colors like orange-red & blue-green; included subtle nods towards a southwestern culture with cacti & sun rays; added unique details like feathers along its wings; gave it powerful legs meant for speed; plus even included two stars near its head symbolizing both strength & courage - all elements that help make up today's classic version of the Roadrunner we know today!
Since then there have been some minor modifications made over time but overall they've stayed true to Evans' original vision while also keeping up with modern trends – making sure their mascot looks just right no matter if you're seeing him printed onto t-shirts or standing tall atop one their buildings down at campus! It truly embodies what makes UTSAs proud identity so special: Strength through diversity combined with hard work will always get you further than anything else can - whether it be running away from danger or sprinting past your competition toward success!!
