Retrievers Primary Logo
As fans of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Retrievers, we have a long history to be proud of. From our school's founding in 1966 to our many NCAA tournament appearances and conference championships, there is much for us to celebrate. Our primary logo, which has been with us since day one, is an important part of this legacy.
The first UMBC Retrievers logo was created in 1967 when the university opened its doors as an independent institution under then-President John Dorsey. The design featured a shield shape with two crossed oars at its center and “Retriever” written along the top edge in white lettering against a black background. This original design was intended to represent strength and determination – traits still associated with UMBC today!
While it has gone through some minor changes over time – most notably changing from a black & white coloring scheme to blue & yellow -–the essential elements remain essentially unchanged: two crossed oars inside a shield shape topped by “Retriever” written across it all against either blue or yellow backgrounds depending on which version you see being used currently by teams or departments around campus.
In addition, we can also find variations on this classic look, such as those featuring different colors for each element, like red/white/blue or even purple/gold combinations, during special occasions like Homecoming Week celebrations. No matter what color combination you might come across, though, they all share one thing: pride! We take great pride not only in wearing these logos proudly but also in knowing that they represent something bigger than just athletic teams; they symbolize who we are as members of the UMBC community: resilient, determined individuals striving towards success both academically & athletically!
