Nittany Lions Primary Logo
Penn State Nittany Lions have had a long and proud history, with their primary logo being no exception. The original Penn State Nittany Lion logo was designed in 1948 by artist Joe Platt and has since become one of the most recognizable logos in college sports. The iconic blue and white lion head with its signature mane is instantly recognizable to fans all over the world, making it an integral part of Penn State's identity.
The design for the current version of the logo was unveiled in 1983 when then-athletic director Jim Tarman wanted to create a more modern look for his program that would still honor its past traditions. He hired graphic designer John Altdorfer who worked closely with Platt’s original sketch to come up with what we know today as “the classic” or “old school” version of this beloved symbol. This particular iteration has been used ever since on athletic uniforms, merchandise, banners around campus, and other university paraphernalia - making it easily identifiable among students, alumni & fans alike!
In recent years there have been some variations made on this classic design; however, none quite capture why so many people love it so deeply like those first few versions did back when they were first introduced decades ago! Despite any minor changes that may be made throughout time – from generation to generation – one thing remains true: That iconic blue & white lion will always represent something special about Pennsylvania pride at Penn State University!
