Red Wolves Primary Logo
The Arkansas State Red Wolves have a long and proud history of representing their school in NCAA athletics. The primary logo for the team has evolved over time, but it still retains the core elements that make it unique to this university. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the history of the Arkansas State Red Wolves Primary Logo and how it has changed throughout the years.
The first iteration of what would become known as “the wolf head” was designed by Bob Whitehead in 1957 when he was hired as an assistant professor at ASU (then called Arkansas A&M). At that time, Whitehead created two logos: one featuring an aggressive-looking black bear with claws extended toward his prey, and another depicting a fierce red wolf with blazing eyes staring out from beneath bared teeth. The latter design won out due to its more intimidating appearance—it seemed better suited for use on athletic uniforms than did the former's tamer design—and thus became known as “the Wolf Head." Over time, minor changes were made to refine details such as fur texture or eye shape here or there; however, no major alterations occurred until 1995 when then-athletic director Dean Lee decided to update all sports logos across campus including those belonging specifically to football and basketball teams like ASU's own men’s basketball squad (now known simply as "Redwolves"). This new version featured much cleaner lines than before while also incorporating some traditional Native American symbols into its overall composition--namely arrows pointing outward from each side of what is now referred to affectionately by many fans simply as "the Howling Wolf."
Since then only slight adjustments have been made here or there such that today we see essentially exactly the same basic logo used since 1995 save perhaps some small refinements which may be difficult even for most diehard fans to spot without being told about them beforehand! While other programs around the country might come to go through multiple iterations every few decades theirs remains a largely unchanged testament to both longevity and staying power associated with the beloved mascot/logo combo they've had since the mid-1990s!
