The Buccaneers unveiled a slightly altered logo on February 20, 2014. The laces on the football are white on the new logo instead of black. Overall, the changes appear subtle. The "skull and swords" remain central to the appearance. However, the appearance is cleaner than its predecessor.

1997 - 2014
For the 1997 season, the Buccaneers worked with the NFL to develop a more marketable and intimidating look in order to improve the team's image. "Bucco Bruce" was replaced by a red flag displaying a white pirate skull and crossed sabres which is a modified Jolly Roger similar to that of Calico Jack. The flag was mounted on another sabre.

1976 - 1997
Long-time Tampa Tribune cartoonist Lamar Sparkman designed the first team logo. Faced with the challenge of designing a logo that did not closely resemble that of the other "pirates" in the league, the Oakland Raiders, Sparkman came up with a pirate in a plumed slouch hat, with a large hoop earring, clutching a dagger in his teeth. The pirate appeared to be winking. He came to be known as "Bruce the Buccaneer" or "Buccaneer Bruce" sometime shortened to "Bucco Bruce."
Evolution of the Buccaneers’ Primary Logo
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo has undergone one of the NFL’s most dramatic visual transformations. The original “Bucco Bruce,” introduced in 1976, was a winking pirate in orange and red—fondly remembered but often mocked. The new Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo, first introduced in 1997 and updated in 2014, brought a darker, more aggressive look. Today’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo projects power and intensity across helmets, merchandise, and digital platforms. Fans of the old Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo often celebrate its retro charm, but the current version has become a fan favorite thanks to Super Bowl success and modern branding. Deeply rooted in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo history, this primary emblem connects past and present. For official visuals, team updates, and more, visit the Buccaneers’ website.
