Astros Wordmark Logo

The Houston Astros have a long and storied history, which is reflected in their logo. The current wordmark logo was introduced in 2013 and has become a symbol of the team’s identity. It features an italicized “Astros” with orange, navy blue, and white colors that represent the city of Houston.

The original design for the Astros was created by legendary designer Bill Bensawanger back in 1965 when they were known as the Colt .45s. This first version featured an old-style western font with two stars above it to signify Texas pride; however this design only lasted one season before being replaced by another star-heavy look featuring five stars on either side of “Houston” written across a baseball diamond shape background. While this second iteration did last longer than its predecessor (from 1966 until 1975), it still wasn't popular enough to be remembered fondly today.

In 1975, after ten seasons under its previous design (and nine years since joining Major League Baseball), the team decided to switch things up again with yet another new look designed by Paul László - who also designed logos for other teams such as Atlanta Braves & Cleveland Indians at that time. This third iteration featured script lettering inside a brick wall shaped like a home plate—a fitting metaphor considering how integral home runs are to baseball success! Since then there have been several minor adjustments made over time but overall this iconic logo remains relatively unchanged from what we see today: bold italicized letters spelling out "Astros" along with a classic color scheme representing both space exploration & Texas state flag respectively.
