D.C. United Primary Logo
The original D.C. United primary logo (1996–1997) featured a bald eagle with spread wings on a red field, clutching three soccer balls over three white stars. These elements symbolized the Washington, D.C. region's three jurisdictions and the eagle's power and speed. Black, red, and white colors defined the design from the start. A major redesign came before 1998, reorienting the eagle leftward, removing the bottom stars, and adding a central gold star with a soccer ball to honor the 1996 MLS Cup win. Three raised wing feathers kept the jurisdictional nod. This version lasted through 2015 with minor tweaks, like adding silver stars for additional titles.
In 2016, D.C. United unveiled a refreshed D.C. United primary logo as a modern evolution. The updated shield incorporated D.C. flag stripes across the enlarged eagle, bolder lines, a dynamic wordmark, and deeper shades of black, red, and white. It preserved core symbols like the bald eagle while enhancing visual impact for today's era. These changes reflect the club's growth and commitment to tradition.
