The New York/New Jersey MetroStars logo has a long and storied history that dates back to 1996. It was the first Major League Soccer team in the area, and it quickly became one of the most recognizable logos in American soccer. The original logo featured a star-shaped shield with two stars inside, representing both New York City and New Jersey. The colors were red, white, blue, and black; these same colors are still used today on all MetroStars merchandise.

In 2002, the club underwent an extensive rebranding process which included changing its name to Red Bull New York (RBNY). As part of this change they also updated their wordmark logo from “Metrostars” to “Red Bulls” with a bold font style alongside an accompanying bull icon placed next to it for emphasis. This new look was designed by designer Tom O'Grady who aimed at creating something modern yet timeless that could be easily recognized by fans across America as well as around the world.
