Express Logo History
The Los Angeles Express was a professional American football team that played in the United States Football League (USFL) from 1983 to 1985. Although they only lasted three seasons, the Express left an indelible mark on USFL history with their iconic logo and uniforms. The Express logo featured a blue-and-white shield emblazoned with an LA interlocked inside of it – which represented both Los Angeles and "express" simultaneously. This classic design has become one of the most recognizable logos in all of the sports, standing as a symbol for not just the franchise but also for USFL fans everywhere.
When designing their new identity, owner William Oldenburg wanted something that would stand out from other teams’ logos while still conveying his vision for what he called “the expressway to success” – namely speed and efficiency through hard work and dedication. To achieve this goal, Oldenburg enlisted renowned graphic designer Dan Simon who had previously worked on NFL franchises such as Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers among others. After months of research into potential designs, Simon finally settled on two versions: one featuring just lettering spelling out “Express," while another included both letters plus an image representing motion or speed within them (which eventually became known as "LA Interlock").
Ultimately it was decided that incorporating both elements into one cohesive design would best capture not only Oldenburg's mission statement but also evoke feelings associated with traveling at high speeds - something which many Angelenos could relate to due to its proximity near major freeways like I-5 or 405! With this decision made by management back then comes today's timeless classic; A badge proudly worn by former players & staff alike whenever they reminisce about those days when anything seemed possible...
