Nittany Lions Wordmark Logo
Penn State's Nittany Lions wordmark logo has a long and storied history. The iconic symbol of Penn State pride dates back to the early 1900s when it was first adopted as the official school logo. Since then, it has undergone several changes in design and color scheme over the years to keep up with changing trends in collegiate athletics branding.
The original version of the Nittany Lion logo featured a blue lion’s head on top of an oval-shaped shield that had “Pennsylvania State College” written across it in white lettering. This classic design was used for nearly four decades until 1948 when a new version featuring two lions facing each other atop a shield with “Pennsylvania State University” written underneath debuted at football games against Pitt and Rutgers universities respectively.
Since then, there have been several more updates to modernize its look while still keeping true to its roots; most recently being unveiled during Penn States' 150th-anniversary celebration where they introduced their latest iteration which features two white lions standing side by side with above an updated university nameplate inscribed with "We Are..." followed by "PENN STATE". These subtle but significant changes serve as reminders that even though times may change, our commitment remains steadfast—a sentiment we can all appreciate!
