It seems these days that everybody is revamping or recreating things of the past and the Senators are no different. Ottawa was introduced into the NHL alongside the Tampa Bay Lightning as the league’s 23rd and 24th teams. The Lightning have been on their fourth logo since the 2011 season and now the Senators have joined them, creating their fourth, but very familiar logo in team history.
Ottawa Senators Primary Logo 1993 - 1997
Ottawa’s first-ever logo was a disembodied senator or gladiator head with what seems to be a headdress towards the back of the logo. The front of the logo where the senator is facing reads the team name in a half circle formation. This logo was extremely short lived as just 5 years later, the team decided it was time for something new, but not too new. Just ten years later, the team decided it was time for a full revamp of the logo and went with a forward-facing senator to make it seem a bit more menacing. This logo was the longest tenured logo in team history, but that ended in 2020.
To the older Senators’ fans reading, if this looks familiar to you then you have a great memory. Despite this being the newest logo for Ottawa, it has striking similarities to the first and second logos in team history.
Ottawa Senators Primary Logo 2021 - Present
The biggest difference for between the original logos and the new one is the color of the gold and red. The gold is darker in the newest iteration while the red is actually lighter. Another noticeable difference with color is with the cape flowing towards the left side of the logo. In the 90s and early 2000s, the cape was outlined in red instead of gold. The gold outline stays consistent with the outline of the headdress and keeps it flowing directly from the semi circle at the front of the logo.
Inside that semi circle, Ottawa decides to keep the laurel leaves as a main focal point, keeping that a part of the team’s identity since the 1997 season. One last noticeable difference from the original logo is the helmet of the senator. The original 1992 logo had a short form of a laurel leaf on the front of the helmet but the newest iteration no longer has that.
