The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream is going through a franchise re-birth of sorts for the 2020 season. In addition to playing in a new home arena, the team unveiled an overhaul of its logo for the first time since its inception in 2008.
The old logo, featuring a red and sky-blue Atlanta Dream script with a basketball flying out of it, is gone. Replacing its crest that’s more reminiscent of a soccer club than a basketball team, but it's sharp. The logo is predominantly black, with accents of red, sky blue, gray, and white.
According to the team, the elements inside the logo represent icons that relate to the team’s home city of Atlanta.
Atlanta Dream Primary Logo 2020 - Present
“The rising phoenix symbolizes the city’s rise from the ashes of the Civil War to become a world city,” the team explained in a press release. “The shooting star ties the Dream back to its roots… Finally, the basketball represents the game we pour everything we have into each day.” The red color, which the team calls Dream Red, is a unifying color among Atlanta’s professional sports teams.
A new series of alternative logos also accompanies the new mark. One alternative logo is the same crest, but with only the text “Dream” and without “Atlanta.” A modified crest featuring an “A” is another alternative logo, accompanied by a block-letter “ATL” in Dream Red, with a sky-blue star above the “L.”
“The Atlanta Dream’s new brand reflects our strong heritage as a city and a team, while looking toward the future,” Atlanta Dream President and General Manager Chris Sienko said in the press release. “Our team worked closely with (designer) David Tann to reflect the strength of diversity, talent, and athleticism that all Dream fans and the City of Atlanta can be proud to wear.”
Atlanta Dream Alternate Logo 2020 - Present
The Dream is coming off a disappointing 8-26 record in 2019, but the club has had some success in its brief history. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals as recently as 2018 under current head coach Nicki Collen, and the Dream qualified for the WNBA Finals three times in four years from 2010 to 2013, with players like Lindsey Harding, Erika de Souza, and Coco Miller leading the way. Unfortunately for Atlanta, they were swept each time they reached the finals, twice by the Minnesota Lynx and once by the Seattle Storm.
The team is playing in the new Gateway Center Arena in the Atlanta suburb of College Park. The Dream will share the 5,000-seat venue with the College Park Skyhawks of the NBA G League. Before the move, they primarily shared the downtown State Farm Arena (formerly the Philips Arena) with the Atlanta Hawks. Disagreements with Hawks management led to the move to the more intimate venue.
