Beginning play in 1960 in the American Football League, The Titans of New York, now known as the New York Jets, have had an illustrious history filled with NFL greats the include Joe Namath, Matt Snell, Don Maynard, Curtis Martin, Joe Klecko and Darrelle Revis. With the team having struggled lately, a new logo image was deemed necessary by the organization.
In the past, the Jets have had a plethora of logos ranging from an actual plane with the name “Jets” on it to multiple variations of a football with the city abbreviation of “NY” in the background with the team name “Jets” in the foreground. While this has been the common theme of the logo since 1964, a new logo is being ushered in that combines the nostalgia of the previous logos, with the prominence of the city they identify with today.
The newest logo from the New York Jets includes the classic New York Jets football-shaped background with an updated color entitled “Gotham Green.” The words “New York” are no longer abbreviated but are prominent in white lettering above the word “Jets.” Slightly overshadowing the bottom of the “E” and “T” is the classic football design of the Jets logo but with a modern touch. In addition, the green background shaped football is more in line with an actual football than the previous logo. A secondary logo that is seen on the helmet includes the word “Jets” with the football slightly overshadowing the “E” and “T.”
Overall, the logo is not a huge change from what it has been since 1964. The biggest change is bringing “New York” into the foreground and changing the color of the logo to a slightly brighter green. We are a big fan of the darker logo with the darker green jerseys. The team felt tougher when they wore that color is it brought out a scary nature in the team. The new logo is a necessary change, and the incorporation of the city’s full name could be something to attract more fans throughout New York City.
In conclusion, the Jets have not revised their primary logo for 20 years.
