SLH News - Duke Logo History

The Determined History of the Duke Blue Devils Logos

The modern sport would be incomplete without the Duke Blue Devils. This team from Durham, North Carolina, has become synonymous with determination and determination. That is why the primary logo has become the hallmark of brave athletes and their will to win. Here's what you need to know about this team and its emblem.

Meaning and History

Although the team was founded in 1888, the name "Blue Devils" received support during the name contest held by the student newspaper in 1921. However, the official logo was not created and displayed until 1936. Unfortunately, Duke University's representatives never told the reasons for this delay. Be that as it may, the image of a creature was present on all the logo versions until 1978.

By the way, the color palette of the emblem always consisted of no more than two shades - blue and white, although there was one version executed in monochrome. By the way, the history of the logo is directly related to Chasseurs Alpins, a group of French soldiers who fought in World War I.

1936 – 1947

The first logo was created in 1936 and included the Devil portrait, turned in ¾, and featured an evil smile. One of the most distinctive features was the thinly painted mustaches and, of course, horns. In addition, the "Duke" lettering in white capitals was placed at the bottom of the logo, which is a good design decision. As a result, the emblem clearly showed the team's affiliation with the academic world and its sinister desire to win.

1948 – 1955

After World War II, the university management changed the team's logo. However, the final version of the emblem was adopted only in 1948. Unlike the gloomy and slightly gothic first logo, the second version was a funny cartoonish logo, which looked friendlier than the previous one. In addition, the logo began to look a little amateurish. Instead of a devil's head, a minor character appeared with a trident and the white letter "D" on his jersey. In addition, he was standing on bold white lettering outlined in blue. This logo was liked by both athletes and fans of the team.

1955 – 1966

In 1955, the primary logo became monochrome. However, the image of the Devil remained cartoonish except for his pose. This creature stood straight and looked more massive, corresponding to the team's status. In addition, the lettering in a bold outlined typeface was slightly enlarged, and the symbols were placed closer. This decision made it possible to give the logo solidity and integrity. In general, the decision was also received positively by the majority of the team's fans.

1966 – 1971

In 1966, the emblem was redrawn entirely. Now the cartoon character has turned into a sleek portrait of a Devil with smooth, stylish lines. Blue has become the primary color for the logo. White lines complemented the emblem, making the devilish grin more sinister. This redesign looked great on the uniform and reflected the strong character of the team.

In addition, such a logo was easier to identify at the stadium. In general, this logo has been compared to the Fantômas movie. The mask of the main villain was similar to the club's emblem (it has the shape of the face of the Devil). The only difference was the color which is generally a minor detail.

1971 – 1978

In 1971, the primary logo was changed again. This time the Devil was drawn in total growth. The contours of the creature have become quite detailed. In addition, the flame-like outline around his figure made the logo very original. By the way, the blue and white color palettes remained untouched.

These colors created a feeling of cold and fire at the same time, which perfectly conveyed the unpredictable nature of the team. It was the last official logo with the image of the Devil, which stayed with the team until 1978. Many team fans still believe this logo should not have been changed. He looked honest and solid, just like www.writingpapersucks.com and its reviews.

In 1978, the university leadership decided to unify the logo for all sports teams and remove the Devil from its logo. Instead of a mystical creature, a custom-stylized letter "D" in blue appeared on the emblem. Its form was very similar to a gem, which emphasized the value of the team. Plus, the custom letter evokes a sense of elegance and chic. Although the logo has lost its cartoonish elements, the new design with filigree lines is also recognizable.

Duke Blue Devils: Basketball, Football & Soccer

Duke University is a private research university in Durham with basketball, football, soccer, and hockey teams. All of them have a single logo, except for different background colors. For example, the basketball logo is the letter D on a blue background (black for football and gray for soccer). In general, the letters remain unchanged, with a gem-like design. Such a logo perfectly reflects the team's ambitions and desire to win.
