Three weeks ago, the Washington Commanders finally decided on their new name, logos, and uniforms. Finally, a sense of newness was in the air as the team unveiled its team name, as well as its secondary logo and alternate logo.
After three weeks, the Washington Commanders have made a slight change to their alternate logo.
\ Washington Commanders Alternate Logo 2022
The alternate logo was a circular design with a white background in its outer layer. Additionally, it features the words “WASHINGTON FOOTBALL” in burgundy. The circular logo contains an inner circle with a gold outline. There are four quadrants within the inner circle. The top left says “EST 19” while the bottom right contains “32.” This is to establish the fact that the franchise has existed since 1932. The top right quadrant contains the franchise’s new secondary “W” logo, except that the W was colored white and had a burgundy background. The bottom left quadrant of the inner circle has three white stars with a burgundy background.
The bottom of the circular alternate logo contained the championship years in burgundy. The years were 1937, 1942, 1983, 1988, and 1992.
Washington Commanders Alternate Logo 2022 - Present
During the years 1937 and 1942, there were slight inaccuracies in the championship years listed as “1983, 1988, and 1992”. These years were representative of the date in January when the Super Bowl was played. It was not representative of the championship season. The actual championship seasons that the Commanders won the Super Bowl were 1982, 1987, and 1991.
Given the inaccurate representation of Super Bowl-winning seasons in the championship logo, fans voiced their displeasure.
The Commanders initially sought to resolve the issue by changing their years to the Roman numerals of the Super Bowls in which the team played. However, they were not permitted to do so by the NFL because the NFL held the copyright to those Roman numerals.
After that, the franchise decided to put the adjusted years in the alternate logo. After a brief process of getting approval from the NFL on the new logo updates, they were permitted to move forward. Therefore, the bottom half of the outer circle of the alternative logo now reads “1937,1942,1982,1987, and 1991.
The Commanders have already commenced the process of updating the alternative logo online. Fans who have pre-ordered the Commanders' jersey will have the updated crest with the years accurately reflected on it. It is scheduled to be released at the beginning of July.
