Los Angeles Rams Logo History and Evolution

Los Angeles Rams Logo History and Evolution

The Los Angeles Rams have a rich history dating to their inception in 1936. Along with their on-field achievements, most notably their two Super Bowl championships, the Rams have experienced several logo changes throughout the years, reflecting the team's evolution, relocation, and identity. This article will take you through the history and transformation of the Rams logo, from its humble beginnings to its current design.

1936-1945: The Cleveland Rams

The Rams were originally based in Cleveland, and their first logo featured a simple blue ram head on a white background. The team was named "Rams" to honor the hardiness of the Fordham Rams, a college football team in New York. The logo reflected the team's straightforward approach to representing their identity.

1946-1950: The Los Angeles Rams (First Stint)

When the team relocated to Los Angeles in 1946, the logo was updated slightly to suit the new location. The blue ram head was now facing left, featuring a side view of a charging ram. The team continued to use this logo while they were in Los Angeles, and it served as a simple but effective representation of the Rams' new identity.

1951-1969: A New Design

In 1951, the Rams introduced a new logo with a white head and yellow horns. It also included more detail in the ram's face and horns. This new design significantly differed from the previous logos, which were strictly blue and white.

1970-1982: Modernizing the Ram

The logo was updated again in 1970, featuring a more modern design. The ram's face was flipped to the right sight, and the color was removed - showcasing only a white ram with a black outline. This design, with some minor updates along the way, was used for over 12 years.

1983-1994: A Bolder Look

The Rams changed their colors to royal blue and yellow, and their new helmet replaced the ram's head for the team’s official logo. This update reflected the Rams' ongoing evolution and signaled the team's commitment to maintaining a strong visual identity.

1989 the Rams updated their logo design to coincide with the modern-day NFL helmet.

1995-1999: The St. Louis Rams

The team moved to St. Louis in 1995, and they updated their logo accordingly. The words "St. Louis Rams" replaced the helmet - written in blue and outlined in a darker yellow. Designers employed a blue and yellow arch above the name "Rams," symbolizing the famous arches seen in St. Louis. The Rams would sport this logo up through their Super Bowl championship 1999 before deciding on an update.

2000-2015: St. Louis Rams Logo Update

The Rams made a significant logo change in 2000, going with a more aggressive look and adjusting their color scheme. The writing was replaced with a ram's head facing left, with its horns curving around the sides. The royal blue and yellow color scheme was replaced with a more navy blue and goldish brown tone, signifying a more modern look.

2016-2019: The Los Angeles Rams (Second Stint)

The Rams returned to Los Angeles in 2016, and the logo was slightly modified to mark the team's return. In 2017, the team kept the navy blue but replaced the golden brown with white. Their new helmets also reflected this change, but the team kept the golden brown in their jerseys and pants. The subtle shift signaled the Rams' return to their original home and design, re-establishing their connection to Los Angeles.

2020-Present: A New Era

In 2020, the Rams unveiled a new logo to coincide with the opening of their new stadium. The design features a stylized "LA" monogram with a ram's horn integrated into the "A." Their colors also went back to the famous blue and yellow look, more closely resembling the 1980s and 1990s. Designers added a modern touch with a lighter blue and brighter yellow.

The Rams had a great start with the onset of their new logo, winning Super Bowl LVI against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, after a poor 2022 season highlighted by injuries, they want to rebound.
