The Vancouver Canucks will sport several different looks during the 2019 - 2020 season, which is their 50th anniversary season.
The primary logo isn’t really changing. The only difference is that the wordmark “VANCOUVER,” which was added in 2008, is being removed. The letter “C” with the orca breaking out of the ice remains the same as it has since 2008 when the blue that represents the ice in the lower portion of the “C” was darkened, and the outline was changed from red to black.
With the removal of the city name, the logo is larger and more prominent on the home and away jerseys. It was also done to foster more inclusivity for fans who claim ownership of the team but may live in different parts of British Columbia or western Canada.
“The 50th season presents an opportunity to honor our history, while launching a new era of Canucks hockey with a modern look,” Canucks Sports and Entertainment COO Trent Carroll said in a press release issued by the team. “This evolution preserves our team identity and acknowledges a tradition of Canucks hockey that is as vibrant and rich in history as the West Coast.”
The alternate logo, which is a throwback to the organization’s original logo from 1971 - 1978, will remain on the alternate jerseys that will be worn 10 times this season. It features the outline of a hockey rink with a stick going through it. The stick vaguely resembles a “V,” while the stick-breaking the ice allows the rink to form a “C.” While the green, blue, and white color scheme of the logo remains, the inside part of the rink changes from blue to white, while the stick changes from white to blue. The boards of the rink are now green instead of white, and the entire outline is white instead of green.
Also making its return for the 50th anniversary season is the “flying skate” logo that the club used from 1979 - 1997. The red, yellow, and black logo features' a skate with lines in it to make it look like it’s travel reveling at a fast speed, and it has the word “CANUCKS” beneath the skate in yellow, outlined in red. This logo and uniform won a fan vote and will be worn three times this season. This jersey was popularized by the 1993 - 1994 team that reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals vs the New York Rangers and featured Pavel Bure and Trevor Linden.
A special 50th-anniversary logo was also created. It features a dark blue 50 with the blade of a hockey stick cutting through the 5. The logo does not appear to be on any of the jerseys for this season, but it is displayed at center ice on the team’s home rink at Rogers Arena.
