For the 2018 season, the Milwaukee Brewers have changed their primary logo for the sixth time in 48 years, moving to the typical letter logo that is widespread throughout Major League Baseball. The Brewers have been very discreet about the change, as they have been using this logo for many years since it was introduced as an alternate logo. However, in recent years, they have informally been using the alternate version more than the primary logo and are now making it officially the primary logo.

The new primary logo has been moved from their alternate logo collection, which began as an alternate logo in 2000, over 15 years ago. The change from alternate logo to primary is now a trend in MLB, most recently Colorado Rockies made this same change last year after several other teams made similar switches of logos.

The new 2018 “M-Barley” logo preserves the rich tradition of what the barley leaf symbolizes to the city of Milwaukee, as it is prominently displayed below the letter “M.” The letter “M” represents the city of Milwaukee. This logo also continues the rich color scheme from the previous logo with blue and gold.

Unfortunately, the Brewers did not revert to a rendition of the classic Milwaukee primary logo, featuring the letter “MB” shaped like a baseball mitt, from 1973 to 1994. This creative and classic logo is still a fan favorite to this day. The Brewers' logo history has shown very distinctive logo changes in the past until this most recent change.

Finally, this new logo features a distinct style, highlighted by the scripted font for the letter “M” and a color combination of blue and gold. The scripted letter and the barley leaf separate the Brewers from the typical block letter logo that has been in MLB from the early 1900s. If we must change to a letter logo, the Brewers did get right by staying away from the block letters such as the Cleveland Indians did in 2016.
