Starting as the Detroit Cougars in 1926, the team changed its name to the Detroit Falcons in 1930 before finally becoming the Detroit Red Wings in 1932. The team comprised one of the “Original Six” that made up the NHL from 1947 until 1967 and, having won eleven Stanley Cups, has become one of the most successful ice hockey franchises ever.
The Red Wings are a trendy team - both sports commentators and fans refer to the Detroit area as “Hockeytown,” a registered trademark owned by the franchise since 1996.
The Winged Wheel
The Detroit Red Wings logo, the “winged wheel,” is instantly recognizable from sportsbooks across Michigan to ice hockey stadiums all over the US. It has been used by the team since its inaugural season in the 1930s and was voted the second-best logo in the league by The Hockey News in 2008.
This logo—a red and white wheel boasting a set of wings—is part of a long history of winged wheel symbols, which have been used since the time of the Ancient Greeks and were associated with the God Hermes. In heraldry, the symbol typically represents transport, progress, and speed, which is particularly relevant for the Detroit Red Wings.
The logo hit the headlines in 2017 when the team threatened legal action against a white supremacist group using a modified version. The Red Wings strongly condemned the group.
Most Loved Players
Gordie Howe is not only loved by Detroit Red Wings fans but is widely regarded as one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time. Debuting for the team in 1946, Howe went on to play in the NHL for five decades, the only player to have achieved this feat to date. Howe won the MVP Award six times and led the league in scoring six times, too. The “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” was named for him when a player records an assist, a goal, and a fight in the same game.
As the longest-tenured captain in the NHL’s history, Steve Yzerman spent all the seasons of his twenty-two-year career with the Red Wings and continues to be regarded with great fondness by fans today. As well as having three Stanley Cup wins under his belt, Yzerman (known affectionately as Stevie Y) has 692 goals and 1,063 assists. He’s now the team’s general manager.
The Season Ahead
The Detroit Red Wings’ 2023-2024 season kicked off on October 12th in a game against the New Jersey Devils, which the Red Wings lost four to three. The team hosted the Home Opener on October 14th - after an epic battle, the Red Wings triumphed six-four over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Little Caesars Arena, home of the Red Wings, will host eighteen weekend home games throughout the 2023-2024 season through to the regular season finale on April 16th.
